Most stylists have a well-curated list of 'Must Haves'. A collection of wardrobe staples they encourage their clients to own and wear.
I believe that the purpose of these garments is to make it easier to look fantastic.
These pieces simplify the process of getting dressed every day. I don't believe that everything on any list of 'must have' items works for everyone. I have found that over time, your unique list emerges and it becomes the backbone of your fabulous, functional wardrobe.
My own list is rather short. It contains just three mandatory pieces.
Number One- A black blazer
Those who know me are not at all surprised that this is the first item on my list. The only reason this 'certified lover of all things navy blue' didn't choose a navy blazer is because it's just not as versatile. If you're a blazer girl, then you should have both. A black blazer and a navy blazer.
A blazer is a wardrobe staple. It provides instant polish. Buy one that fits you well. It should feel good on your body...comfort is key with a blazer. I seek out jackets that have a bit of stretch.
Number Two- A pair of great jeans
You need at least one pair of fantastic jeans.
What makes a pair of jeans fantastic?
They are comfortable and fit you beautifully.
The color can be dressed up or down.
The cut is classic and the style is unadorned.
You love wearing them!
My go-to jeans are dark denim with traditional five pocket styling. I prefer a slim straight leg that can be cuffed.
Bodies come in all shapes and sizes...so do jeans. The truth is that you must do the work and get into a fitting room. It's similar to finding a great fitting bra:-) The pay-off is huge.
I believe you should buy the best jeans you can afford. Good denim feels better, looks better and lasts longer.
That said, if your budget is tight there are lots of options...
Shop resale (Plato's Closet has racks of denim) borrow from your boyfriend and cinch the waist with a belt or seek out more expensive denim on sale (Anthropologie often has great jeans marked down to $69.95 or less).
Jeans are a fashion work horse!
It's worth investing the time to find a pair you will want to wear often.
Number Three- A striped tee
Leave it to the French. The Breton striped t-shirt is a classic. A cult favorite.
In 1858, a navy and white striped knit top was introduced as the uniform for
all French navy seaman.
After a visit to the French seaside, Coco Chanel was inspired by the sailor's shirts .
In her 1917 collection, she shared this design with the fashion world.
A navy and white striped tee remains quintessentially, perfectly French.
I love stripes! I believe there is a horizontal stripe out there for everyone.
I'm partial to these classic combinations:
navy and white
navy and cream
black and white
black and cream
Again, these t-shirts can be found in every possible price range. Search until you find one you that makes you feel like you're vacationing on the French Riviera. Buy it!
There is much more to say about 'Must Have' lists. I will explore how to create your own list in a future post.
