Mercado de San Miguel is a feast for all of the senses. This awesome market is located in central Madrid...within walking distance of Plaza Mayor. It is lively and colorful and delicious.
My advice on how to get the most out of a visit to Mercado de San Miguel...
If at all possible plan to visit the market twice. Preferably on two different days. Here's why...
There is SO much to see and taste that one trip is simply not enough! (but, once is better than not at all) And...you are wiser the second trip. You have learned your way around a bit and can navigate the busy market more efficiently.
These are the two ways I like to the adventure of Mercado de San Miguel...
1. Plan to eat and drink at the Mercado. Go with the idea that it is a bar/restaurant where you will be having some wine or beer and tapas...maybe even dessert. When you first arrive, take a quick walk through most of the market...get the lay of the land. Then start to gather your yummy goods. There are tables and stools throughout the building and spilling onto the street. Buy what you'd like to taste and have a seat. Once you've enjoyed your first round...venture out again. It is completely possible to eat an entire lunch or dinner by just collecting delicious bits throughout the market.
2. Plan to create a delicious take-away meal to be eaten in your hotel room or flat. This way provides an equally wonderful experience. Same idea...troll through the market and select things you'd like to eat. Everything can be packed for carry-out. Almost everything is available in small portions, allowing you to taste so many things!
Three items not to be missed at Mercado de San Miguel:
The olives. More choices than I have ever seen in one place. The stuffed varieties are sold by the piece. No excuse not to taste several!
Paella. Spanish to the last bite. We always ran out of this first.
Chocolate and Churros. Simply brilliant for breakfast or snack or dessert.
