This might be my favorite day of the entire challenge! I love jackets.
By jackets I mean a structured layer that can be worn outside when it’s
mild and inside almost always.
I’m not sure when I developed my love of jackets. It’s been many years since I fell for the defined, classic lines of this wardrobe staple. The jacket
is a go-to garment for finishing an outfit. It’s the perfect layer to pull a look together with very little effort.
1. Black or navy blazer- I could limit this list to only the blazer because it can really be worn in place of the following three garments. However, for the sake of variety, I’ve included all four.
The blazer is magical. It can be worn with jeans just as easily as with a dress. It adds instant polish and sophistication. You can find a blazer at
any price point. They’re available everywhere….from Target and Old Navy to J Crew and Banana Republic. Search consignment and thrift stores…even the boy’s section of department stores. A great blazer should fit well through the shoulders and make you stand a bit taller…feeling empowered by its beautiful shape.
2. Leather jacket- I searched for the perfect leather jacket for years before finding it. A real leather jacket can be expensive and should be considered an investment piece. Be sure to choose one you absolutely love! I often found leather jackets that I liked, but something wasn't quite right. Then it happened. The perfect leather jacket appeared shortly before my birthday a few years ago. It has classic moto styling, it's comfortable and the best part is...it’s navy blue. I couldn’t love it more! I received it as a birthday gift. It was worth the wait.
Faux or vegan leather is a great alternative to real leather. Again, there are many stylish options available at every price. Many of the vegan fabrics can be machine washed, making them super practical. The technology
has improved so much that often when receive new ‘leather’ jackets at Anthropologie, I can only tell they are faux leather by checking the fabric content label or the price.
Choose one that’s comfortable and fits your level of moto-rocker-chic. Black and brown leather jackets look awesome on others, but never felt authentic on me…which is why I chose navy blue. Stick with a timeless design and a color that works with the rest of your wardrobe. A leather jacket is always right for those days when you want to express just a bit of badass-cool-chick.
3. Denim jacket- A timeless classic. The denim jacket is super for tossing over a dress or skirt and top when the sun goes down. It also works well in the fall and spring as a coat. I know the trend is to wear denim with denim, but I’m still more comfortable pairing a denim jacket with non-denim items. This garment just gets better with age. Wear it often to acquire that incredible broken-in softness.
4. Green military inspired jacket- I was late to this party. It seems that I saw this type of jacket on everyone, everywhere…but just didn’t think I needed to have it. Boy was I wrong. This is another wardrobe stable. The color and the styling are different than the other jackets listed here. This jacket is just as great with jeans as it is with a dress. Try on several, as some shades of green will be better than others. The military greens often range from very yellow to very blue. Choose one that is flattering with your skin tone.
