Be you. I find this simple concept to be somewhat difficult, yet I believe it’s vital to true happiness. I had my first ‘aha’ moment surrounding this idea years ago when I read the book Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. For many women, this true story touched on something deep and important.
Women everywhere were reading the book and wondering what they could and should do differently to create a life of real meaning and joy.
Several passages in the book really hit home for me. The idea of being completely authentic was especially moving.
I read the paragraphs that described Liz Gilbert being a bit envious of another student who wore a SILENT pin and was consciously practicing silence. Later, Ms. Gilbert finally gets her chance to don a SILENT pin and begin her silent journey. Almost immediately after making the choice to be silent, she is asked, almost pleadingly, to take on a new role...that of welcoming the incoming students. A job that requires anything but silence. Liz realizes that her true essence is anything but silent.
When I read those words, I was floored. Prior to reading Eat, Pray, Love, I’d spent time in a yoga class with an instructor who I really admired. She was peaceful and poised. Lovely and always calm.I longed to become like her. In my mind, I saw my future-self as a quiet and serene being.
After reading about Liz Gilbert embracing her authentic self and realizing that she isn’t meant for silence, I realized that I was dreaming of becoming something I’m not meant to be. I am not quiet and peaceful, I’m loud and enthusiastic.
If I was going to present my authentic self to the world, I needed to embrace me. Be me.
Refine and tweak as necessary, but in general...polish up the parts of my personality that make me, me.
What to explore this for yourself?
